Five-star point guard has narrowed his list of schools to three

Five-star point guard D.J. Carton has trimmed his list of potential schools to just three, despite reportedly having interest in both Duke and North Carolina, along with a handful of other elite hoops programs.

Carton took to Twitter on Sunday night to announce his three finalists, naming Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State as his possible landing spots in 2019.

Although Carton had already narrowed his list of schools to six – Indiana, Iowa, Marquette, Michigan, Ohio State and Xavier – he expressed his desire to receive scholarship offers from college basketball’s blue bloods in a recent interview with Rivals.

Carton hadn’t heard directly from Duke or UNC, but representatives from both schools had reached out to people close to him in order to get to know him a little better and gauge his interest. Both schools were planning to be on hand to watch Carton play during the July evaluation period, but those visits may now be on hold in light of his latest announcement.

Despite their apparent interest in Carton, the Tar Heels never made the move to offer him a scholarship. The reason for that is unknown, but it looks as if North Carolina, along with Duke and just about everyone else, will now be on the outside looking in.

The Tar Heels could certainly use some more bodies at the point guard position in their upcoming recruiting classes, despite having a commitment from 2019 top-50 point guard Jeremiah Francis.

Seventh Woods lacks experience, and has just two years of college eligibility remaining. There’s also no telling how long Coby White will remain in Chapel Hill, or what position 6-foot-8-inch Rechon Black will play once the dust settles. So having an insurance policy beyond Francis would be a good thing.

Roy Williams currently has no offers out to other ball-handlers in the class of 2019, but that doesn’t mean that he won’t pull the trigger at some point in the coming months. It just looks as if it’ll be someone other than Carton – the No. 2 point guard prospect in the 2019 class – who may very well end up in Ann Arbor next season.
