UNC Athletics: Jordyn Adams named MaxPreps Athlete of the Year
By Zack Pearson
Jordyn Adams is honored for his high school career with Green Hope on Wednesday
Former University of North Carolina Tar Heels football and baseball commit Jordyn Adams has had one wild senior year in high school.
After starring on the football field for Green Hope, Adams took his talents to the diamond in the Spring for baseball season. The multi-sport athlete gave his verbal commitment to both the Tar Heels football and baseball programs last July, giving fans some hope for the future. Adams was one of UNC’s top recruits in their 2018 football class alongside William Barnes.
While it was always thought that Adams would go the football route, his baseball career took off even more during his senior season.
He helped Green Hope reach the finals of the National Tournament early this Spring for the first time ever. Adams did it offensively, defensively and on the base paths putting together a very impressive tournament. As Adams’ season went on, his stock continued to rise for the upcoming MLB Draft.
When June came, Adams was selected in the first round of the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft by the Los Angeles Angels and decided to pursue a professional baseball career rather than enroll at UNC.
For Adam’s efforts, he was rewarded in a big way.
Adams was named the MaxPreps Male High School Athlete of the Year for 2017-18 on Wednesday night. The prep website officially gave Adams the honor as he joins recent winners like Lonzo Ball, Patrick Mahomes and Derrick Henry as athletes to win the award.
Adams former high school football coach, David Green, praised him and what he’s accomplished so far in his career:
"“Richly deserved,” Green said. “No doubt. Hard to be an All-American in two sports.“Beyond all that athleticism, he’s just a great kid. He enjoys all the other kids and they enjoy him. In many ways, he’s just a typical high school kid. Except now he’s an instant millionaire (laughter).”"
Adams just recently signed his deal with the Angels and will report to rookie ball for the organization. He will look to climb the minor league ranks and become a staple in LA’s outfield for years to come.
Although Adams will never step foot on UNC’s campus as a member of the Tar Heels football or baseball programs, it’s still great to see him succeed in all that he’s doing.
