A UNC football recruit and a big target will participate in Nikes premiere recruiting event, The Opening beginning on Friday

One of the top football camps of the Summer is set to take place beginning Friday when recruits descend on Frisco, Texas to participate in “The Opening.”

The annual recruiting event is put on by Nike to showcase some of the top high school football talent in the country. Recruits are split up onto teams where they will play in a round robin-style tournament with 7-on-7 all the way until the finals.

The event used to be broadcasted on ESPN but now just the final day is shown on NFL Network.

At last year’s event, UNC was well-represented at the time with both Jordyn Adams and Tyler Shough representing the Tar Heels. A year later, Adams is heading to MLB to play in the Los Angeles Angels’ organization while Shough decommitted and will attend Oregon in the Fall.

This year the Tar Heels will have one recruit that is verbally committed in their 2019 class represent them in the event. They will also have a big target participating.

Wide receiver Emery Simmons flipped his commitment from Indiana to North Carolina in June and will play for Team Elite in this week’s event. The three-star receiver will have the chance to showcase his skills, much like Adams was able to last year.

Simmons will be joined on Team Elite by UNC offensive line target Darnell Wright.

The 6-foot-6, 295 lineman is one of the top players not only at his position but in the entire 2019 recruiting class. He’s one of UNC’s top targets and is ranked as a four-star player with interest from Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson, and Virginia Tech among others.

Wright was recently at UNC’s Freak Show event and was reportedly impressed by that weekend in Chapel Hill. With programs like Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson as the favorites, it’s hard seeing UNC overcome them and winning the battle for Wright.

Still, Wright’s performance at the Opening and his recruitment will be something to monitor.

The 22nd edition of Nike’s The Opening will begin on Friday, June 30th and will run through Tuesday, July 3rd. It will take place in Frisco at The Ford Center at the Star.
