Danny Green appears to be staying in San Antonio for at least another season

Former University of North Carolina sharpshooter Danny Green really likes it in San Antonio with the Spurs. In fact, Green likes it so much that he’s planning on staying at least one more year.

According to the San Antonio Express News, Green plans on skipping free agency and instead opting into the final year of his deal with the Spurs. The Express News broke the story Thursday night during the 2018 NBA Draft.

If Green does decide to opt-in to that final year he will earn close to $10 million for the upcoming season.  By opting-in Green will play in his ninth season with the Spurs organization, a place where he has found a home and has won an NBA title.

He’s become a very solid option for the Spurs after being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers out of UNC in the 2009 NBA Draft.  Over his nine-year career Green is averaging 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

In addition to being an NBA Champion, Green has also been named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in his career. Green also set the NBA Finals record in 2013 for most three-pointers in a series breaking Ray Allen’s record that was set with the Boston Celtics.

After a disappointing season, the Spurs now enter a big offseason that is already being highlighted by drama surrounding Kawhi Leonard. The forward has expressed his desire to be traded as he’s not happy with the organization.

If Leonard is traded, it could open up some more playing time for Green and carve out a new role in the offense.

Green is currently spending his offseason hosting the “Danny Green Skills Clinic” in a few different Texas cities. On Friday, he turned 31-years-old as campers sang happy birthday to him.
