UNC Basketball: Theo Pinson signs deal with Brooklyn
By Zack Pearson
Theo Pinson went undrafted on Thursday night but he quickly signed a deal with the Brooklyn Nets on a two-way contract
Former University of North Carolina forward Theo Pinson didn’t hear his name called during the 2018 NBA Draft on Thursday night but that doesn’t mean his dream is over.
Pinson spent four seasons at UNC before graduating this past May. Now, he’s got a new temporary home as he has signed a deal following the draft.
According to Draft Express, Pinson has agreed to a two-way contract deal with the Brooklyn Nets as an undrafted free agent. The move comes just minutes after the draft concluded as several undrafted prospect agreed to terms with teams.
Going into the draft, Pinson was projected to be anywhere from a late second-round pick to an undrafted player. His former head coach, Roy Williams, was selling NBA teams on the fact that Pinson could be a solid point guard in the league.
Standing at 6-foot-6, Pinson has the size to be a perimeter player and has the skillset on defense to find a home in the NBA. While the scoring ability is something he needs to work on, Pinson flashed what he could offensively in his career with the Tar Heels by being a good rebounder and passer.
In his senior year, Pinson averaged 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game for the Tar Heels. He was always considered as a “swiss army knife” type of player, being able to do it all on both sides of the court.
Going through the predraft process, Pinson worked out for several teams including the Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets and New York Knicks among others. It is unknown if he had a workout with the Nets.
From here Pinson will join the Nets Summer League team where he will try to earn his way onto the NBA roster. The Summer League begins on July 7th with every NBA team competing.
If Pinson doesn’t find his way onto the Nets’ active NBA roster, he will likely sign a deal to assign him to the NBA G-League.
