Class of 2020 prospect impresses at Southern Jam Fest

The North Carolina men’s basketball program is currently looking to make a big splash in the class of 2019, but Roy Williams and company have already begun to take a long look at some of the top prospects in the 2020 class.

One of those prospects is Day’Ron Sharpe, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound power forward out of South Central High School in Winterville, North Carolina.

A four-star prospect according to the Rivals 150, Sharpe has received multiple visits from the UNC coaching staff beginning at the U-15 circuit nearly a year ago. Sharpe later made a trip to Chapel Hill for an unofficial visit to watch the Tar Heels take on the Pittsburgh Panthers in February.

Sharpe is an excellent basketball player, particularly from an offensive standpoint. His ability to score efficiently in a variety of ways helps him stand out from the crowd. He’s a good leader on and off the court, passes well and sets teammates up in good positions to succeed. He’s a good rebounder, rim protector and possesses good instincts for the game.

Rivals’ recruiting analyst Corey Evans recently watched Sharpe participate in the 2018 Hoop Group Southern Jam Fest, and was extremely impressed with his performance. In fact, Evans called Sharpe the tournament’s “most productive” player and had the following to say of the talented big man:

"One of the hottest names on the East Coast this spring, Day’Ron Sharpe went from a promising high-major prospect and into a priority recruit for some of the top programs. Virginia, UNC, NC State, Clemson and Wake Forest have offered and more are due to follow.Built in the mold of former top-50 big man and now Indiana Hoosiers center De’Ron Davis, Sharpe was utterly dominant all weekend. He is an underrated passer with a quirky-but-effective mid-range game. However, Sharpe is at his best around the basket as he sports elite hands and soft touch on either hand. A developed back-to-the-basket offensive weapon, Sharpe is a walking double-double and it is going to be interesting to see if the new coaching staff at ECU can keep the homegrown talent in Greenville."

He averaged 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds as a sophomore for South Central, helping lead the team to an appearance in the regional finals.

He’s holding offers from ACC rivals NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest, as well as East Carolina, Florida and Old Dominion. It’s still very early, but North Carolina appears to be the leader in Sharpe’s recruitment at this time.
