A huge weekend has pushed the Diamond Heels into the top 5 in the latest college baseball rankings

Oh how sweep it is.

The North Carolina Tar Heels baseball program is coming off a big weekend sweep of rival N.C. State, taking all three games in Raleigh. The sweep not only showed that the Tar Heels are for real but it also gives them the best record in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

After a slow start to the season going 7-7, the Tar Heels have now gone 24-6 and have won 16 of its last 18 ACC series dating back to last season.

Their latest series win has made some national headlines.

The Tar Heels have now jumped five spots from No.10 to No. 5 in the new Baseball America College Baseball Top 25 poll. UNC is now the top ranked ACC team in the poll, leapfrogging the Wolfpack.  In addition, UNC is now No. 4 in RPI.

Only No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Ole Miss and No. 4 Arkansas are ahead of the Tar Heels in the poll.

In the D1 Baseball poll released on Monday, the Tar Heels moved up but they didn’t crack the top 5.

Instead, the Tar Heels were ranked as at No. 6 in the poll behind No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Oregon State, No. 4 Ole Miss and No. 5 Arkansas. UNC was ranked No. 10 in last week’s D1 Baseball poll and moved up four spots after the sweep.

The Tar Heels will now enter the month of May atop the ACC and can control their own destiny for the conference tournament.

UNC will host UNC Asheville on Tuesday, then have an entire week off before hosting Richmond on May 8 and Coastal Carolina on May 9. Their next ACC series is a weekend one against Duke beginning on May 11 in Durham.

They close out the ACC regular season by hosting Virginia Tech beginning Thursday, May 17th.
