Roy Williams hits the recruiting trail in the form of the AAU circuit this weekend

The Spring/Summer AAU circuit is underway as this weekend some of the top high school basketball recruits across the country will participate in tournaments.

Events are scheduled to be held in Dallas, Irving, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Indianapolis over the course of the weekend. It provides a chance for college coaches to scout players while watching the AAU games.

University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams made his first stop in Dallas for the weekend as he watched a few recruits during Friday’s session according to Rivals’ recruiting analysts Eric Bossi and Corey Evans.

The big recruit that Williams watched was class of 2019 power forward Vernon Carey Jr.

Earlier in the week Williams was in Florida to visit with Carey Jr. before the quiet period as the top recruit in the class hosted a few top coaches. Carey Jr. was the prospect to see on Friday night at the EYBL session drawing Williams, Coach K, John Calipari, Jim Larrañaga, Tom Izzo and Mike White.

Following the session, Carey Jr. talked to Rivals to update his recruitment and told them that it’s going well. He also hinted at when he would narrow down his list, which you can read here.

While Williams is recruiting a few big men in the 2019 class, he also has his sights on a position of need for the Tar Heels.

UNC has a problem at point guard and failed to land a true point guard in 2018. Jeremiah Francis is the lone verbal recruit in 2019 but Williams might be looking for more help at the position.

On Friday Williams watched the top 2019 point guard Cole Anthony.

The New York native drew a list of impressive coaches watching him on Friday including Williams, Mike Brey, Coach K, Chris Mack, Calipari and John Beilein.

Anthony hasn’t revealed too much on his recruitment but expect UNC to continue to pursue the point guard.

Williams appears to be digging into the Kansas pipeline with 2019 power forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl who plays for KC Run GMC. Robinson-Earl is a top 20 player in the class and a five-star recruit.

The 6-foot-9 power forward drew Williams, Bill Self, Mike Brey, Bruce Weber and four coaches from Oklahoma at the night session in Dallas for the UAA circuit. Robinson-Earl becomes another big man target for Williams who is also recruiting Will Baker and Matthew Hurt.

Williams and UNC staff are expected to be in attendance on Saturday for more AAU action as they scout recruits.
