Top UNC Football players for 2018: No. 25 Dyami Brown
Keeping It Heel begins its countdown of the top 25 football players on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ roster with player No. 25
The college football season kicks off in about five months, and it will be here before we know it. The NFL is in the midst of free agency and the NFL Draft is right around the corner.
So what better way to get into the football mood than getting a sneak peek at the future of the North Carolina football team?
The Tar Heels brought in three stellar wide receivers in their recruiting class this season. Let’s take a look at No. 25 on the list.
Position: Wide Receiver
Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina
High School: West Mecklenburg
Last Season: As an incoming freshman, Brown played last season in high school. Last year he helped his team reach the second round of the state playoffs. He was also invited to the 2017 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas where he had a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The past two seasons, Brown accumulated 1,630 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns as a top-300 prospect and No. 33 overall wide receiver according to ESPN. He has also played stints at defensive back.
Why he might move up this list: The past two seasons, North Carolina has lost four top flight receivers (three in 2016, one in 2017). That means there is a lot of opportunity for a player like Brown to be able to step up and fill the void.
Additionally, one of his top freshmen competitors, Jordyn Adams, may not even step foot on the field if he is drafted high enough in the upcoming MLB draft. All of these things create opportunities and Brown is more than capable of taking advantage.
Why he might move down this list: The aforementioned Adams would be one reason. Adams is the more heralded recruit, and could forgo the MLB draft this off-season. If he does, he will be with the Tar Heels for the next three years, and he may get more opportunities because of his shorter shelf time.
Additionally, wide receiver is not an area in which UNC is lacking. In the midst of all of their injuries, the Tar Heels still redshirted three freshmen, while playing two others. The Tar Heels also return their top receiver from last season, who also returns kicks.
In other words, it may be hard for Brown to get reps on the field.
Prediction: I picked Brown over fellow freshmen Adams and Antoine Green, because I believe he has the best chance to play this year, especially if Adams goes the baseball route. However, the depth will make it hard if he doesn’t stand out on his own.
Brown has a less than stellar freshman season, catching 12 balls for 137 yards and a touchdown.
Next: ACC title game will remain in Charlotte through 2030
