Seventh Woods’ progression

One of the biggest storylines this offseason will be the progression of point guard Seventh Woods.

The former four-star recruit hasn’t taken the big leap expected in his second year and was plagued by an injury this season. Woods sat out a few weeks with a foot injury and lost some playing time with it.

With the departure of Jalek Felton from the program, Woods will take on a big role for the Tar Heels in 2018-19. He’s expected to be the starter going into the year, with Williams likely leaning on the junior to run the offense.

But with that, comes some questions.

Woods didn’t really light up the stat sheet in his junior season and struggled at times to get into any sort of rhythm. By missing games, it took Woods to get back into the swing of things and never really developed.

He finished the 2017-18 season averaging just 1.1 points and 1 assist per game. Now a lot of that was due to missing time. As Woods enters next season, his numbers should certainly go up.

He’s got some familiarity with Roy Williams’ offense and also had the benefit of learning behind Berry for two seasons.

A lot of UNC’s success next year could hinder on the development of Woods and how he runs the offense. He doesn’t have to be a scoring point guard and instead could be a more traditional point guard by distributing the basketball. If that’s the case, then Woods could be very good for the Tar Heels next season.
