Gunter Brewer is leaving the North Carolina Tar Heels and heading to the NFL in a move announced on Monday

The North Carolina Tar Heels football program will have to find a new receivers coach.

On Monday, the program announced that receivers coach Gunter Brewer is leaving Chapel Hill and taking a job in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. Inside Carolina is reporting that Brewer will be the wide receivers coach for the Eagles.

After defeating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, Philadelphia promoted Mike Groh to offensive coordinator leaving a void at the wide receiver position. Instead of finding a candidate with NFL coaching experience, the organization turned to Brewer for the job.

Brewer has spent the past 11 seasons in Chapel Hill starting in 2000 and lasting until 2004 before taking wide receiver coaching job at Oklahoma State in 2005. He’s spent the last six years in Chapel Hill under Larry Fedora working as receivers coach, assistant offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator.

Brewer has also had stops at Ole Miss, Mississippi, Wake Forest, Marshall and East Tennessee State totaling more than 30 years of experience.

The loss of Brewer will not only be seen in the receiver position but in recruiting as well. He had a big impact in-state landing some big receivers from the Charlotte area.

Brewer has coached receivers Randy Moss, Dez Bryant and Justin Blackmon in his career. At UNC, Brewer was a big reason for the success of Quinshad Davis, Ryan Switzer, Erik Highsmith, Mack Hollins and Jawarski Pollock.

By joining the Eagles, Brewer will be reunited with his former UNC receiver in Hollins.

The Eagles selected Hollins in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, adding him to a receiving core that featured Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor and Torrey Smith. The addition of Hollins gave quarterback Carson Wentz another deep threat down the field.

Hollins finished his rookie season with 16 receptions, 226 yards and a touchdown. He’s a candidate to make a big jump in his second season and with his old coach Brewer back, we can see it happening.
