`The latest Tar Heels Tidbits closes out the month of February with a senior night loss, a baseball team win and much more

The month of February has come to a close as we turn the calendar to March on Thursday. That means one thing.

March Madness!

Our favorite time of the year is officially here with conference tournaments kicking off next week followed by Selection Sunday and then the NCAA Tournament.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team, they saw their win streak snapped on a hear-breaking buzzer beater to Miami. It spoiled Senior Night for the Tar Heels and also made things a little messy in the ACC Standings.

UNC can now earn the No. 2 seed with a win over Duke or fall to as low as No. 6 with a loss and multiple teams winning.

As for the Diamond Heels, they got back on track after an ugly 1-4 week. They won 10-0 on Tuesday, hopefully getting them on track.

Here’s the latest in UNC news:

Basketball

  • As we mentioned before, it took a buzzer-beater to beat the Tar Heels on Senior Night from Miami. Our recap can be found here.
  • Prior to the game, UNC seniors Joel Berry, Theo Pinson, Kane Ma and Aaron Rohlman received a framed jersey.
  • Following the game, Berry and Pinson both gave their Senior Night speeches along with head coach Roy Williams.
  • Pinson had a career-high 9 assists in the loss.
  • Berry scored 31 points, including the game-tying three-pointer with just under 10 seconds let. It was all erased seconds later.
  • Just how bad was it for UNC on Tuesday? Check out these stats for Miami entering the game, and how they played during the game:
  • As mentioned before, seeding is now up in the air. UNC can earn a No. 2 seed with a win over Duke. If they lose they will be passed by the winner of Miami/Virginia Tech. If NC State goes 2-0, they pass UNC. If Clemson goes 2-0 they pass UNC.
  • You should be rooting for Florida State to beat Clemson. That would mean UNC finishes no worse than 5th in ACC Tournament.
  • UNC remained a No. 2 seed in the West Region in Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology.
  • The women’s basketball team tips off the ACC Tournament on Wednesday taking on Boston College in Greensboro.
  • Destinee Walker received the Athletic Director Scholar Athlete of the Year award at halftime last night. Congrats Desitnee!
  • Janelle Bailey picked up some big honors Wednesday. She was named the 2017-18 ACC Freshman of the Year.

Baseball

  • The Diamond Heels got back on track with a 10-0 win over High Point. Michael Busch has 15 RBI on the young season, becoming the first player to record 15 RBI through first 9 games since Mark Fleury in 2009.
  • The win gave head coach Mike Fox his 850th career win!
  • The Diamond Heels will host Liberty for a three-game home series this weekend.

Football

  • Both M.J. Stewart and Andre Smith will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine beginning March 1.
  • Here’s a breakdown on Stewart from Steelers Depot.
  • Smith was interviewed before the NFL Combine with Pro Football Talk Line.

Heels in the Pros

  • Former UNC linebacker Zach Brown is poised to land a big deal in free agency. We wrote about that here.
  • A pair of game-worn, signed Converse shoes form Michael Jordan’s time at UNC are being auctioned off.
