Roy Williams was not happy with UNC’s effort against Virginia Tech on Monday night

Things got ugly for the North Carolina Tar Heels Monday night in Blacksburg, Virginia.

UNC dropped its third Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season and did it in ugly fashion, losing 80-69.

All three of UNC’s ACC losses have come on the road this year and all three have been very frustrating.

But it appears as if the latest one has really gotten to head coach Roy Williams.

Following the loss on Monday, Williams sounded off on his team’s effort in his postgame presser.

The head coach was upset with UNC’s effort, which included being outrebounded by the Hokies and allowing them to earn second chances with offensive boards.

Roy addressed that some key details as to why the Hokies were able to do that and then ended it with how upset he was.

“Again, attention to detail and going to the boards,” Williams said. “Guys, I’ll give you something and it’s more information than you need to know. A guy is going down for a layup and as a defensive player on your team, it’s a challenge. If you’ve got a second guy, and I’ve said this since I was two-and-a-half years old, the second guy is supposed to freaking box out. So they miss the layup and a guy runs by one of our guys and catches it and lays it up again. I’m a little disappointed. I’m a little upset, a little ticked off.”

UNC led 28-21 with just about six minutes left in the first half before the Hokies went on a 18-4 run to close out the half and grab a 39-32 lead.

From there, the Hokies didn’t look back despite UNC closing the gap to just two points in the second half.

Virginia Tech took advantage of 13 UNC turnovers and earned a much-needed home win over a ranked opponent.

For UNC, it was more of the same story as the previous two road losses in the ACC. The team looked flat and uninspired, putting themselves three games behind Virginia in the ACC.

The Tar Heels will have to wait until Saturday afternoon to get back on track as they host NC State in the Dean Dome.

UNC won both meetings between the two teams last season but the Wolfpack have wins over Duke and Clemson in conference play already this season.
