I Just Call you Mine

That is what Virginia Tech must say to Virginia after the Commonwealth Cup every year now, Mine, because the Hokies own the Cavaliers in this series.

The 10-0 win on Friday was the 14th straight win as well as the 18th win in the past 19 meetings. Virginia Tech has outscored Virginia during this stretch by an average of 29-13. The Hokies have scored over 30 points nine times during this stretch, the Cavaliers once.

Additionally, the shutout was the third shutout by the Hokies of the Cavaliers since 2005, the most by any one program over another during that stretch. If that is not ownership I don’t know what is.

In this past game Virginia Tech held Virginia to less than 200 total yards of offense on 54 total plays for 3.5 yards per play. The Hokies also held the Cavaliers to just nine first downs and 4-for-15 on third downs.

Of course, on the other side of things there is the Hokies hoping that Coach Justin Fuente continues to consider Virginia Tech his home. Coach Fuente has been mentioned for several other jobs, including the Tennessee job that remains open.

Fuente has now won at least nine games in four straight seasons and will continue to be a hot commodity for those who are interested in the offensive guru’s services.

However, that’s a later problem. Right now, the Hokies need to focus on their upcoming bowl game which should once again be a good one as the third ranked team in the ACC.
