UNC head coach Larry Fedora is being considered for the Mississippi State job according to a report

The departure of Dan Mullen to the University of Florida has left an opening at Mississippi State University for head coach of their football program.

The Bulldogs will now have to replace Mullen and hope to keep some of their top recruits in the 2018 class.

But with an opening down in Starkville a familiar name is starting to pop up as a candidate.

According to a report from Football Scoop, University of North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora could be considered for the open position.

The report states that Fedora could be considered for the opening and has been eyeing a head coaching job at an SEC school for the past year or so.

"Word has been that Fedora has been eyeing SEC opportunities for the past year or so. Perhaps this is the one. Larry Fedora most definitely fits the “ball coach” description as well."

Fedora just wrapped up his sixth year at UNC going 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the ACC in 2017.

His best year came in 2015 when he led the Tar Heels to an 11-3 overall record and an 8-0 conference record. They won the  Coastal Division and appeared in the conference title game.

Fedora has complied a 43-34 overall record at UNC and is in the middle of a crucial rebuild for the program.

The rough season had led to the decommitment of two top recruits and Fedora has to turn things around in a hurry.

He could find this as the best chance to take another big job as the Tar Heels are rebuilding.

There’s a connection to the state of Mississippi which makes this an intriguing situation. Before coaching the Tar Heels, Fedora spent four years as head coach at Southern Mississippi.

Fedora could inherit a Bulldogs program that went 8-4 this season and has a top 15 recruiting class. Now that recruiting class will likely change with the loss of Mullen but it’s still an attractive program for recruits.

He would also have a stable quarterback on his offense in Nick Fitzgerald. The quarterback has been doing his part in hopes of keeping top recruits for the program via Twitter.

We haven’t heard much more on the situation and things would likely have to develop fast for Fedora to leave UNC and go to Mississippi State as the Bulldogs want to fill the position as soon as possible.

Fedora did visit class of 2018 commit Avery Jones on Tuesday night, a good sign for UNC fans:

The other thing to note is that Fedora did go 3-9 and had his worst season at UNC in 2017. That’s not really something that stands out for a program like MSU looking to hire their next coach.
