Joel Berry solidifies his place in Tar Heel history by winning the Bob Cousy award

It has been five years since Kendall Marshall won the Bob Cousy award, the last Tar Heel to do so.

The Cousy award is given out to the nation’s best point guard, and it was Frank Mason who won it last year.

UNC has won the most Cousy awards, three in total, since the first one was given out in 2004. The winners are Marshall, Tywon Lawson, and Raymond Felton.

Many have debated where Berry stands in the ranks of Roy Williams point guards, and I believe should he win the award, he would be the best Tar Heel point guard under Roy Williams.

Berry certainly has the game to warrant winning the award, but his issue will be time.

As many know, Berry will be out till late November after breaking his hand. So he will be racing against the clock, with one less month than other point guards. But when Berry comes back, he will be guns blazing, ready to prove the remaining doubters wrong.

When the AP All-American teams came out this week, Berry was a notable snub. He finished behind Jalen Brunson, who was the point guard on the first team. Brunson already beat Berry for a national title in 2016, but now it is Berry’s turn to get revenge.

Despite having almost a month less than other players, Joel Berry will leave North Carolina as the best point guard to ever play under Roy Williams. And to go with that, he will have a nice, shiny Bob Cousy award to take with him.
