After decommitting from Auburn, could E.J. Montgomery be headed to UNC?

The wheels appear to be falling off for the Auburn basketball program.

Last week, the school suspended two players who are the alleged recipients of impermissible benefits according to the FBI’s multi-year investigation that uncovered mass corruption, bribery and wire fraud involving some of college basketball’s biggest programs.

The news comes just weeks after the Tigers lost a commitment from top-25 prospect E.J. Montgomery, who announced his decision the day after the FBI’s report was released.

Now, having reopened his recruitment, the four-star power forward is weighing his options between Baylor, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Texas A&M and others.

And although Montgomery has given no indication as to where he might end up, there are those who believe that the talented big man could end up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina next season.

According to Rivals’ Eric Bossi, Corey Evans and Dan McDonald, North Carolina has a chance to land the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2018 class.

The Tar Heels began showing interest in Montgomery long before his commitment to Auburn, and now appear to be one of the front-runners to benefit from the Tigers’ loss. It would be an especially important commitment for North Carolina, given the likelihood that it misses out on five-star big man Simisola Shittu.

Montgomery is a 6-foot-10, 200-pound power forward who would round out an already terrific 2018 Tar Heels recruiting class that includes two top-25 players.
