Vanderbilt in the lead for top-10 prospect

At one point, North Carolina seemed like the favorite to land class of 2018 five-star prospect Simisola Shittu. It would appear now, though, that Shittu has all but eliminated the Tar Heels and plans to commit to Vanderbilt.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward confirmed that he was no longer planning to make an official visit to North Carolina. Initially, the visit was scheduled for this weekend.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello confirmed the news, noting that it is unclear whether or not Shittu plans to commit during the early signing period or not.

Given that the early signing period began on Wednesday, and Shittu canceled an official visit with one of his two remaining schools, it would make sense for him to get his commitment out of the way in the fall, rather than wait til the late signing period in April.

The Tar Heels already have a nice 2018 recruiting class that includes two five-star prospects in Nassir Little and Coby White. They were, however, hoping to snag another big man in 2018, though the class seems particularly thin in terms of front court talent.

If Roy Williams and the Tar Heels are unable to get a commitment from another top-tier big man, then they’ll have to hope for the continued growth and progression of the current freshman class that consists of Garrison Brooks, Brandon Huffman and Sterling Manley.
