Five-star recruit Simi Shittu reportedly won’t be in Chapel Hill this weekend

It appears as if the North Carolina Tar Heels won’t be receiving a visit from one of the top recruits in the 2018 class afterall.

Five-star forward Simi Shittu was scheduled to take a visit to UNC this weekend as the Tar Heels opened up their 2017-18 schedule against Northern Iowa.

But instead, Shittu won’t be visiting according to Scout’s Evan Daniels. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello also confirmed the news on Wednesday morning:

Shittu is reportedly down to UNC and Vanderbilt in his recruitment and appears close to an announcement decision.

Just weeks ago the Tar Heels appeared to be the favorite for Shittu as they were looking to add to their already impressive 2018 class.

Now Vanderbilt is the strong favorite for Shittu as Daniels writes:

"Shittu is strongly considering Vanderbilt and has taken an official visit to their campus. North Carolina is involved to some degree, but there isn’t a visit set and Shittu appears close to a choice. Vanderbilt seems to be surging as the favorite to land Shittu."

The 6-foot-8, 210 pound Shittu would fill a big void in the Tar Heels frontcourt if he decided to attend UNC.

UNC is entering this season with a big question mark in the frontcourt. They have three freshman in Garrison Brooks, Sterling Manley and Brandon Huffman this year and return Luke Maye. But it’s still a work in progress.

Nothing is set in stone for Shittu just yet but all signs are pointing to Vanderbilt, especially if he signs in the early period.

Wednesday began the early signing period and it will last one week until Nov. 15. The next signing period comes April 11 following the conclusion of the college basketball season and lasts over a month.

If UNC does lose out on Shittu, they could shift their attention even more to other big recruits in 2018 and 2019.
