How Sweet it is

Truly there is nothing sweeter than a turnaround season.

With the Cavalier’s four-point win over Georgia Tech, Virginia has had that kind of turnaround, becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2011, just a season after winning only two games.

This has to also be sweet for Coach Bronco Mendenhall, who left a BYU program where he had won 99 games and went to 11 bowl games in 11 seasons, only to suffer through last year’s two-win campaign.

The turnaround has to be vindication against all those who thought he may have made a mistake heading to Charlottesville.

It is also sweet because it looked as though Virginia might come up one win shy of that elusive bowl eligibility. After winning five of their first six games, the Cavaliers lost the next two to teams that looked beatable.

Instead, it was when most probably wrote them off, that they pulled off the win.

It also has to be sweet for Kurt Benkert who had a horrible two-game stretch to Boston College and Pittsburgh, only to come out and have a big game against Georgia Tech.

Benkert finished the game with 260 yards and three touchdowns, but the Cavs should still be worried about his completion percentage which was below 50 percent this past week.

The Cavaliers still have an outside shot at the Coastal crown, but would need to win out and need Miami to lose to lose at Pitt.

That first step takes place this week when they travel to play a Louisville squad that has been beatable this season.
