Some big news regarding UNC football commit Payton Wilson

Linebacker Payton Wilson is one of the University of North Carolina’s most important recruits in the 2018 class.

Wilson along with Jordyn Adams highlight a pretty solid class for Larry Fedora as he hopes to turn this program around after a disappointing year in 2017.

But the latest news from Wilson isn’t good for UNC.

According to an article from Jonathan Alexander and J.Mike Blake of the News & Observer, Wilson’s father confirmed that Payton tore his ACL during last week’s high school game on the opening kickoff.

The outside linebacker is expected to miss the next six months as he hopes to be ready for the 2018 college football season.

Wilson tweeted this out just days ago:

As for that 2018 season, Wilson is still planning on playing in Chapel Hill but his recruitment is taking a turn.

The News & Observer is also reporting that Wilson will take some visits to other schools despite being committed to UNC.

Wilson will reportedly visit NC State (Nov. 4) and Notre Dame (Nov. 18) in the coming weeks just before the 72-hour signing period opens up in December. According to the article, Wilson says he wants to make sure he made the right decision by picking UNC.

Wherever he picks, he will enroll in January.

The news comes just weeks after we wrote on NC State making a late push for Wilson as they watched him play at his high school.

Clemson has also reportedly shown more interest in Wilson as of late.

Despite his verbal commitment to UNC back in May, this isn’t good news for the Tar Heels. With the program struggling this season, it could have a big impact on recruiting moving forward.

UNC has already lost quarterback commit Tyler Shough to Oregon and losing Wilson would put a big dent in their recruiting class.

Wilson is the No. 2 outside linebacker in the 2018 class and a player that can come in and make an impact right away. The Tar Heels just have to hope that he doesn’t change his mind.
