I Walk the Line

In Miami’s past four victories that is exactly what the Canes have been doing, walking the line.

Miami has won their past four games by a combined 22 points. They have either needed a late score or a late turnover to come out of all four unscathed.

This is why there are questions about Miami, despite the Canes being undefeated. It would be one thing if these close games were coming against tough teams on the road. However, the four wins have come against teams that a combined 11-20.

Two of the games have been in Miami and the two on the road came against Florida State and North Carolina squads that are a combined 3-13 and 2-10 in the ACC. Not really the way to impress people.

Sure a win is a win, and technically margin of victory shouldn’t matter, but when dealing with a human selection committee, you know it does.

Miami just does not pass the eye test.

Look at the Tar Heels game. In that contest the Canes forced four UNC turnovers but were outgained by a team that ranks 11th in the ACC in total yards. They also allowed UNC to have more first downs, better third down completion, and more time of possession.

Having watched North Carolina most of this season, I know that they are one of the worst teams in all three of those categories.

Miami will get a chance to prove themselves not only to the football playoff committee but also to the ACC this weekend when they welcome in a Virginia Tech team for what should be for the Coastal Crown this season.

Well that does it for this round of rankings. Before I sign off here is how I rank the entire ACC after one week (Coastal teams in bold, rankings movement in parentheses):

  1. Clemson Tigers (+1)
  2. Miami Hurricanes (-1)
  3. Virginia Tech Hokies (+1)
  4. Boston College Eagles (+3)
  5. NC State Wolfpack (-1)
  6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-1)
  7. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+4)
  8. Louisville Cardinals (-2)

  10. Pittsburgh Panthers (+2)
