Four-star power forward chooses Notre Dame over North Carolina

Four-star power forward Nate Laszewski has verbally committed to play basketball at Notre Dame. Laszewski confirmed his commitment to Scout’s Evan Daniels on Wednesday afternoon.

"“Just sitting down and evaluating my options, it just felt right,” Laszewski said of his decision to pick Notre Dame over North Carolina and others. “I felt like I had the best relationship with the coaching staff there. I felt the University of Notre Dame could give me what I wanted in life.”More from UNC BasketballUNC Basketball: FIRST LOOK at Leaky Black in a Hornets uniformUNC Basketball extends offer to five-star Jasper JohnsonUNC Basketball: Recruits taking unofficial visits to Chapel HillUNC Women’s Basketball named captains for 2023-2024 seasonUNC Basketball: Pete Nance Signs With Cleveland Cavaliers"

Laszewski, a top-100 prospect in the class of 2018, had offers from a number of other big name programs including Arizona, Baylor, Indiana, Texas, Villanova, Virginia and Wisconsin. Along with Notre Dame, Laszewski took official visits to North Carolina and Wake Forest before eventually committing to the Fighting Irish.

Considering that Laszewski began receiving offers in the summer of 2016, it comes as no surprise that North Carolina wasn’t able to reel him in. The Tar Heels came on his recruitment rather late, not offering him a scholarship until July 31st of this year.

It’s worth noting, though, that Notre Dame’s scholarship offer to Laszewski occurred just one week prior to that of the Tar Heels.

He took his official visit to Chapel Hill last weekend, less than two weeks after taking a trip to South Bend to visit Notre Dame’s campus. As it turns out, though, it would be his final visit before committing to the Irish just 5 days later.

Laszewski credited Mike Brey and the Notre Dame coaching staff with doing a good job of visiting him and keeping in contact with him throughout the recruiting process. It appears that the relationship that the two sides cultivated over the past few months was what ultimately led him to his decision.

The 6-foot-10, 190-pound prospect from Northfield, Massachusetts has one year remaining at Northfield Mount Hermon before joining the Irish next summer.

The Tar Heels still have their name in the hat for a number of players in the class of 2018 including five-star prospects Zion Williamson, Romeo Langford, Simisola Shittu and Nassir Little.
