UNC in the NFL: Tracking Tar Heels in Week 3
By Grant Hughes
Bernard scores his first touchdown of the season.
Giovani Bernard continues to make the most out of limited playing time this season.
In a must-win game against the Green Bay Packers, Bernard caught a six-yard touchdown pass that put the Bengals up 14-7 in the second quarter.
For the game, Bernard rushed 3 times for 27 yards and caught two balls for 12 yards.
On the season Bernard is averaging a very respectable 5.1 yards per carry. The only problem is that he’s not getting that many carries.
The former Tar Heel has only 15 carries for the season and has seen his attempts drop each game.
This can be attributed to the Bengals looking to get Joe Mixon more involved in the run game.
The fact he is also ceding carries to the largely ineffective Jeremy Hill is puzzling, especially considering Hill is averaging 3.5 yards per carry on the season.
The Bengals have underutilized one of the most versatile backs in the game and it’s costing them.
My hope is that Bernard finds a new team soon that will showcase his talents as a receiver.
Until then, we can enjoy this hop into the end zone against the Packers:
The Bengals dropped to 0-3 on the young season. But there was some positive news as they managed to score their first touchdown of the season when A.J. Green caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Bernard will look to carve his own role in this offense which also features Jeremy Hill and Mixon.
