I Don’t Need You

These are the words that Justin Fuente is saying to former quarterback Jerod Evans.

Evans left a year earlier than expected to pursue his NFL dreams after leading the Hokies to a Coastal Championship.

A season later, Evans is looking for a job while Coach Fuente is 2-0 with his new signal caller Josh Jackson.

A week after helping the Hokies pull out the win over a ranked West Virginia team, Jackson went 16-of-28 for 222 yards and two touchdowns against Delaware.

The game was also a big win for the defense. A week after allowing 592 yards to the Mountaineers, the Hokies D bounced back with a shutout against the Blue Hens. Virginia Tech held Delaware to 223 total yards and forced two turnovers.

Fuente and his team would love to continue to tell the nation that they don’t need them when they travel to ECU this week. The Pirates are possibly the worst team in football two seasons after telling their head coach Ruffin McNeill they no longer needed him.

ECU is 0-2 allowing 614 yards a game while being outscored 90-34. Meanwhile, their former head coach is defensive coordinator for an Oklahoma squad that is 2-0 and allowing only 259 yards a game.

Well that does it for this round of rankings. Before I sign off here is how I rank the entire ACC after one week (Coastal teams in bold, rankings movement in parentheses):

  1. Clemson Tigers (0)
  2. Florida State Seminoles (0)
  3. Virginia Tech Hokies (+1)
  4. Louisville Cardinals (+1)
  5. Miami Hurricanes (-2)
  6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (0)
  7. Duke Blue Devils (+3)
  8. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+3)
  9. NC State Wolfpack (0)
  10. Pittsburgh Panthers (-2)
  11. Syracuse Orange (-4)
  12. Virginia Cavaliers (0)
  13. North Carolina Tar Heels (0)
  14. Boston College Eagles (0)

As opposed to last week, a lot less change. Some teams still dropped and some still moved up but not nearly to the same degree.

But that’s what happens as the season proceeds, things become more clear, and week three will only add to that clarity. So enjoy the week, because college football is gearing up.
