It only took 16 days but college football is finally in full force. So what was the trend of week one around the country? Starting off slow and ending with a bang.
This trend started Thursday night when second ranked Ohio State trailed at halftime to Indiana of all teams. A second half and 36 points later, the Buckeyes walked out with a 28 point beat down of the Hoosiers.
It continued Friday night when both No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 8 Washington struggled to put away lesser opponents to start the half. Wisconsin. The Badgers went into halftime tied with Utah State, while the Huskies were only up three to Rutgers.
The two teams won by 49 and 16 respectively.
Saturday was not going to be outdone by this trend. No. 4 USC was tied with Western Michigan with just under eight minutes to go, as well as up only four with less than five minutes left. The Trojans won by 17.
Additionally, some ranked teams struggled with their lesser opponents. Louisville (16th in the nation) needed ten fourth quarter points to hold off a Purdue team that finished 3-9 last season.
Meanwhile, No. 19 South Florida trailed FCS Stony Brook at the half and was tied at 17 overall with 13 minutes left in the game.
Then, of course, there was No. 23 Texas who lost by 10 at home to a Maryland team that finished 6-7 last year.
Though not everything was tight for the top 25.
