Heels in the Pros: Mitchell Trubisky dazzles in preseason debut
Mitchell Trubisky made his preseason debut last night for the Chicago Bears and did not disappoint.
Former University of North Carolina Tar Heel quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s selection on draft night by the Chicago Bears was met with mixed reactions.
But there was no debating the reaction of Bears Nation when Trubisky showed off his full array of talent last night in his debut.
The former Tar Heel showed off his athleticism, and his poise in the pocket to deliver strikes all night against the Broncos.
Here is a clip from Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus with Trubisky showing off that cannon arm we saw in Chapel Hill.
Overall on the night, Trubisky was 18-25, for 166 yards, and a touchdown. He also completed his first ten passes of the night.
Bears starting quarterback Mike Glennon went 2-8, for 20 yards, and a pick six. Bears backup Mark Sanchez played limited time throwing only four passes.
Fans and sportswriters alike took to Twitter to praise the outing from Trubisky.
Here is a nice tweet from Damien Woody, former NFL player, and current ESPN personality.
Here is one from former Tar Heel WR, and Go Heels contributor Taylor Vippolis.
And here is a quote from Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune on the performance of the former Tar Heel.
"Trubisky’s performance ultimately salvaged the game. He ran out of time on the final drive. But if there wasn’t a significant buzz around the rookie before his debut, there is now, with more than a few fans ready to fit him for that cape."
The Bears have been searching for that elusive “Franchise Quarterback” ever since Jay Cutler faltered early in his tenure. And while it was a preseason game, Trubisky showed just a glimpse of his full talent.
Trubisky entered the game last night trailing, and then brought them back, keeping the game entertaining.
He showed his ability to roll out and throw strikes, keeping plays alive with his feet.
But one thing he showed was poise.
And that is something he is going to need to lead a franchise in search of that cornerstone. He cannot get to high in the highs, and too low in the lows.
If he keeps this play up, Chicago could find themselves with a big quarterback controversy just months after giving Mike Glennon $40 million.
