3. Roy Williams

Fresh off of his third national title, Roy Williams would be the best coach of nearly any other school, much like Sylvia Hatchell.

Coach Wiliams learned from his mentor, Dean Smith, to never to take too much credit, but he deserves a lot of credit for everything he has done to turn the North Carolina basketball program back into a perennial powerhouse.

When he took over, the program had hit rock bottom. A few rough seasons had fans reeling, searching for the next solution. But most fans knew he could bring that.

Nearly 400 wins, three national titles, and five Final Four appearances later, he has established himself as one of the greatest college hoops coaches of all-time.

He is currently sitting on 816 wins, inching ever so closely to Coach Smith, but he will never admit to being better than the guy who taught him all that he knows.

But perhaps Coach Williams’ best accomplishment was re-establishing the family environment around the program.

It is such a joy to see all the former players grabbing dinner, while posting their pictures on Instagram.

No matter who you played for, once a Tar Heel, always a Tar Heel, and Roy Williams rebuilt that once lost family.

Many people outside the program have different opinions on Coach Williams, but Tar Heels fans know for sure that there will never be another Ole’ Roy.
