6. Karen Shelton

Karen Shelton has been the women’s field hockey head coach for 36 years, since 1981.

One of the most impressive stats that Shelton can boast is that she has only had two losing seasons in her 36-year career. That is truly an incredible stat.

Shelton is currently sitting on a 628-159-9 record as a head coach, and has one of the most incredible championship counts of any UNC head coach.

Shelton has led the program to SIX national titles. That sounds like another Tar Heel great from a different sport.

In nine of her last ten seasons, she’s reached the Final Four, with the last national title coming in 2009.

Shelton has shown no signs of quitting the dominance, returning for the 2017 season, which begins in September. Make sure you keep an eye on the women’s field hockey team this year!
