7. Frank McGuire

Dean Smith gets a lot of credit for building the basketball program at UNC, and rightfully so, but McGuire is criminally underrated for his contributions to the program.

McGuire spent eight seasons at North Carolina, and all but one were winning seasons. His worst season was 10-11, in his second year in Chapel Hill.

It didn’t take McGuire long to get acclimated at UNC. He won 18 games in his third season, and in his fourth, it was quite possibly the best season in Tar Heels history.

His 1956-57 team went the distance, going 32-0 and winning the school’s first ever NCAA championship in basketball.

McGuire helped turn North Carolina basketball into a powerhouse. It was after that title that UNC made the turn into one of the best teams in the country year in and year out.

In McGuire’s last six seasons at UNC, he finished no worse than a tie for second in the ACC standings.

Despite his short time as a Tar Heel, there is no debating McGuire’s place among the greatest coaches in North Carolina history.
