8. Willie Scroggs

Willie Scroggs was instrumental in building the North Carolina men’s lacrosse team.

Scroggs began his lacrosse career at powerhouse Johns Hopkins. As a player, he led his team to three national titles, in 1967, 1968, and 1969.

Before taking the reigns at North Carolina, he was an assistant at his alma mater. In his time as an assistant, Johns Hopkins won two national titles, in 1974 and 1978.

When he came to Chapel Hill, the lacrosse program was still not a big thing. He changed the culture of the program from day one. He brought a winning attitude, coming from a renown lacrosse powerhouse.

In twelve years at UNC, he put together a record of 120-37, good for a .764 winning percentage. He led the team to the NCAA Tournament eleven of his twelve years, and won three national titles.

With those three titles, there is no doubt that Scroggs is among the best coaches in school history.
