The North Carolina sports program has had plenty of great coaches, but who ranks at the top of the list?

From Dean Smith, to Mack Brown, to Karen Shelton, there are a plethora of successful college coaches who have graced the North Carolina Tar Heels athletics department.

The Tar Heels have long had one of the strongest athletic programs in the country. A lot of that can be attributed to the players, but there has been no shortage of coaching talent in Chapel Hill.

Thirteen men’s national championships, and thirty women’s national championships have been won by the best of coaches. But there are a select few that rise above the rest, to put themselves in position to be on this list.

This list is calculated by the coaches’ on field, and off field contributions to their sport, their team, and the university. There have been many coaches who have contributed on the field, but some have not off the field.
