North Carolina football program making moves, forcing ACC to take notice

The University of North Carolina is most commonly associated with the sport of basketball; and understandably so. The Tar Heels are fresh off their sixth NCAA Tournament championship and third in the last 13 years. Like blue bloods Duke, Kansas and Kentucky, North Carolina will always be dubbed a “basketball school”.

However, it’s the North Carolina football program that’s experiencing one of the most successful offseasons that it’s had in years.

Head coach Larry Fedora has made it clear that his intentions are to stay in Chapel Hill, despite the perennial speculation revolving around him and his potential interest in the various coaching vacancies around the country.

And with Fedora at the helm, along with a tremendous coaching staff at his disposal, the Tar Heels are bringing in a talented crop of recruits that should keep the team relevant in the ACC for years to come.

The team received commitments in June from multiple players who attended Fedora’s Freak Show, an annual event held at Kenan Memorial Stadium that functions as a football camp meant to attract some of the top high school football prospects in the country.

Just days later, Fedora got commitments from two class of 2018 quarterbacks; most notably, four-star Arizona native Tyler Shough. Shough, by all accounts, looks to be the Tar Heels’ quarterback-of-the-future.

The Tar Heels are currently in a heated recruiting race for five-star running back Zamir White. White is an elite player and the top running back in the class of 2018. If he were to choose UNC, it would be a program-changing commitment for the Tar Heels. It’s not going to be easy though, given that the Tar Heels are battling the likes of Alabama, Clemson and Georgia. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back is set to make his announcement on June 27th at 12pm EST.

The following week, the team will find out if four-star wide receiver Jordyn Adams has chosen to attend UNC or Clemson. The 247Sports Crystal Ball currently has UNC as the overwhelming favorite to land Adams with an 86 percent probability.

North Carolina is becoming a major player in some of the biggest recruitments in college football, and other schools in the conference, and the nation, are beginning to take notice.

The Tar Heels are soaring up the recruiting ranks with each new commitment, and fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about sports not named basketball.
