UNC Basketball: Former Tar Heel Brad Frederick named assistant coach
For the past four years, Brad Frederick was the Director of Basketball Operations for the North Carolina Tar Heels, but now he’ll transition to assistant coach
In the upcoming 2017-18 college basketball season, there will be a new face on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ bench.
After four years as Director of Basketball Operations for North Carolina, former Tar Heel Brad Frederick will now be an assistant coach under Roy Williams.
The position became available after Williams’ longtime assistant, C.B. McGrath, became the new head coach for UNC-Wilmington.
Wearing Carolina blue is nothing new for Frederick. He attended the University of North Carolina from 1996 to 1999. He had the pleasure of playing for the late, great Dean Smith in his final season and then two years under Bill Gutheridge.
Frederick played on the 1997 and 1998 Tar Heels squads that went to two consecutive Final Fours. Both teams won ACC Tournament titles, too. Several North Carolina greats played along with Frederick during those seasons, including Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Ed Cota, Shammond Williams and Brendan Haywood.
Frederick’s first coaching job was at Vanderbilt University, where he spent 14 years on the Commodores’ bench. After his tenure at Vanderbilt, Frederick came back home to Chapel Hill to work in the basketball program.
The hiring of Frederick as a new UNC assistant coach fares well for the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Championship, Sean May. May has been an assistant to Frederick for the past couple of seasons. May will most likely take over Frederick’s former position as Director of Basketball Operations.
According to Raleigh News & Observer writer Andrew Carter, Roy Williams said that the moves may not become official until July 1st, in regards to the new hire of Frederick and potential move of May.
