What path will the men’s and women’s UNC lacrosse teams have to take to repeat? They found out on Sunday night

Just a week after both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams won the ACC championship, the Tar Heels found out their seeding for the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

The University of North Carolina lacrosse programs will attempt to defend both NCAA championships this year after a historic 2016 season.

For the men’s program, the Tar Heels desperately needed a win in the ACC Championship to get into the tournament and they delivered. Following the win, UNC received the news that they will open their title defense in Albany.

The Tar Heels will open up the tournament on Saturday in Albany against the Great Danes who earned the No. 8 seed.

Here’s how the Tar Heels found out they were in the tournament:

With an 8-7 record, the Tar Heels will have their hands full with an Albany team that went 14-2 on the year.

Both of Albany’s losses came against top teams. The Great Danes lost to No. 1 Maryland and No. 2 Syracuse by one goal in each match.

The two teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night

UNC women’s lacrosse earns two seed

The Tar Heels women’s lacrosse program knew they were in ahead of Sunday’s selection show special on ESPNU.

When the seeding was announced, the Tar Heels ended up landing a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels will open up the tournament Sunday in Chapel Hill hosting the winner of Friday’s first round matchup between Virginia and Elon.

UNC finished 16-2 overall and 6-1 in ACC play this season and won their second-straight ACC title.

Tar Heels head coach Jenny Levy says the team is ready to defend their title via Go Heels:

"“We are excited to go back to the NCAA Tournament,” Levy said. “Each year one of our team goals is to earn a top-four seed through our performance in the regular season and ACC Tournament. I am proud of the hard work and overall growth of this team.  They have proven to be tough and resilient as we worked our way through an incredibly challenging schedule.“The NCAA field of 26 teams is extremely competitive.  There are so many great players, coaches and teams that every game will be a battle.  We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to compete and look forward to taking Fetzer Field on Sunday.”"

UNC’s game against Virginia or Elon will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
