2017 national champion Tar Heels honored by General Assembly, meet Governor Roy Cooper at Executive Mansion

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday morning to meet with members of the General Assembly as well as Governor Roy Cooper at the Executive Mansion.

The House and Senate scheduled a joint session to honor the Tar Heels’ players and coaches after winning the 2017 NCAA Tournament last month.

Cooper, the 75th Governor of the state of North Carolina, was born in Nash County, North Carolina and received his doctorate at UNC.

Before their meeting with the North Carolina legislature, the Tar Heels spent time at the Executive Mansion with Cooper, shaking hands and posing for pictures.

Cooper even made mention of Tony Bradley, Jr. and the importance of his return to UNC next season. According to Brant Wilkerson-New of the News & Record, the Governor jokingly stated that this time next year, people would be talking about Bradley as the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft.

Wilkerson-New also tweeted a photo of the team standing at the podium outside the Governor’s mansion showing that each player of the team was accounted for, including those who are preparing for the upcoming NBA Draft.

Later in the morning, David R. Lewis, Republican member of the House of Representatives, put forth a “bill” that would require both Bradley and junior wing Theo Pinson to return to UNC in order to repeat as national champions in 2018.

Lewis read the document in front of the General Assembly, receiving laughter that was followed by loud applause and support.

Upon taking the podium in front of the House and Senate, head coach Roy Williams stated that Pinson, who is often known for his colorful quotes and press conference interruptions, could one day be seated at the General Assembly after his playing days are over.
