1983-1984 North Carolina Tar Heels

28-3; ACC Regular Season Champions; Sweet 16

You will be hard-pressed to find a better team than this one that did not win a championship. When making a list with the top teams to not win a championship, this team always comes to mind. Maybe the UNLV teams of the early 2000’s come to mind, but this team tops the list.

Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Kenny Smith and this guy named Michael Jordan made up the top players on this team. Jordan alone seems enough to carry a team, but all four of these guys were great college players and even had a solid NBA career. Especially that MJ guy. Ten guys off of this team went on to be taken in the NBA draft.

14-0 in conference play is not an easy task to complete, but this team made it look as easy as possible. They beat Duke twice and hammered NC State twice, something reminiscent of this years games against the Wolfpack.

This team lost to the four seed Indiana Hoosiers in the Sweet 16, 72-68. Unfortunately, this Tar Heel team was subjected to an injury to its point guard.

Kenny Smith broke his wrist during the middle of the season, and missed a portion of the regular season. When Smith came back, the chemistry was never the same.

Despite the talent, this team just could not get the job done. Coach Dean Smith always raved how this was one of the few teams he coached that he believed was the best team in the country. This was Michael Jordan’s final college season before having an incredible NBA career.
