The Tar Heels are back in the Sweet 16, which brings up the question: Which UNC Sweet 16 team is the best to never win a championship?

The Tar Heels find themselves in a familiar situation this season. For the 28th time in program history, the Heels find themselves in the Sweet 16 during the NCAA Tournament.

This year, while they had to sweat it out on Sunday, was not a big surprise to see the Heels in the second weekend. Everybody knew they had the potential, but they just had to avoid the early upset. Now, they are the only team left repping the ACC logo on their jersey.

Other ACC teams could not avoid the upset, with Duke and Louisville both bowing out to seven seeds on Sunday. As previously stated, the Heels trailed late against Arkansas, but a late charge put the Heels ahead in the end.

This piece is not about this year’s team.

The North Carolina program has had some all-time great teams, but some of those teams were not fortunate enough to steer clear of that upset. Today, we are going to rank the top Tar Heel teams to reach the Sweet 16, but not win the National Title, something the program has done six times.

To qualify, the team had to reach at least the Sweet 16, but they could not cut down the nets on the last Monday night. Losing in the title game still qualifies teams for this list!
