North Carolina will meet Butler on Friday, March 24th in Sweet 16

On Sunday night, the North Carolina Tar Heels battled through one of their toughest tests of the season. It came in the unlikely form of a second round matchup with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

And although no one expected the game to play out quite like it did, with North Carolina blowing a massive first half lead and then battling back with stifling defense in the closing minutes, it was a fantastic game that propelled the Tar Heels to their 28th Sweet 16 appearance in program history.

Up next for the Tar Heels is a Friday night showdown with the South Region’s No. 4 seed, the 25-8 Butler Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs certainly had their ups and downs this season, losing to an Indiana State team that finished ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference but beating Villanova twice during Big East conference play.

And the Tar Heels aren’t without blemishes on their 2016-17 campaign either, losing games in which they squandered large leads only to see it slip away in the second half.

But that’s all history and none of that matters now.

Despite records or paths to get to this point, both teams stand in the same place. Both looking to cash in on their opportunity to get one step closer to the Final Four in Phoenix.

And at 7:09 ET on Friday, March 24th on CBS, we’ll watch the South Region’s top seed face off against the fourth-seeded mid-major that made consecutive title game appearances in 2010 and 2011.

The Tar Heels will almost certainly open the week as the early favorite to win the game and move on to the Elite 8, but if this year’s tournament has shown us anything, it’s to take nothing for granted.
