North Carolina Tar Heels vs. LSU Tigers (2009), Second Round (Round of 32)

North Carolina was the best team in the nation in 2009.

The Tar Heels dominated the NCAA Tournament with victories by at least 12 points.

In the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, No. 1 seed UNC faced a tough No. 8 seed LSU Tigers’ squad that won the SEC Tournament that season.

Despite leading the Tigers at halftime 38-29, the game was close for the majority of the first half. About halfway through the second half, the Tar Heels started to set themselves apart from LSU.

Tywon Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough brought their “A” game against LSU.

UNC won the game 84-70; however, it was hard fought game. In the last few minutes of the game, the lead went to double figures.

Lawson and Ellington scored 23 points apiece. Hansbrough scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman forward/center Ed Davis was the key reserve off the bench in this game. In 25 minutes, Davis scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

North Carolina’s performance in the 2009 NCAA Tournament represents one of the most dominant performances by any NCAA championship team.
