Sean May – 2005 national championship

In 2005, North Carolina was the No. 1 seed in the Syracuse Regional. The Tar Heels went into the NCAA Tournament with a 27-4 overall record.

Prior to the tournament, Sean May was on a tear in the second half of the season. The 2005 NCAA Tournament was no different.

In the national title game, May dominated the game by himself.

North Carolina defeated Illinois 75-70 with May scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds. May made 10-of-11 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws.

His performance earned him the prestigious award of the 2005 Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

J.R. Reid – 1989 Sweet 16 vs. Michigan

J.R. Reid was a three-year starter (1986-89) at power forward for the Tar Heels. He was one of the most dominant UNC power forwards in the 80s and all-time.

In this Sweet 16 matchup, North Carolina was the No. 2 seed and Michigan was the No. 3 seed. This game was very close throughout.

Michigan won the game 92-87. Reid finished the game with 26 points and six rebounds. Shortly after this game, Reid announced his decision to forego his final season at UNC and turn pro.
