Tywon Lawson – 2009 NCAA national championship vs. Michigan State

Although Wayne Ellington was the 2009 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Tywon Lawson made a great case for the award.

In the title game against Michigan State, Lawson set two records. He set the NCAA record for most steals with a total of eight and most free throws made in an NCAA Tournament game with 15.

Lawson finished 15-of-18 from the free throw line, helping propel the Tar Heels to the title.

He finished the game with 21 points, eight steals, six assists and four rebounds.

Charles Scott – 1969 Third Place Game vs. Drake

Today, the NCAA does not hold a third place game but many years ago it was a staple in the NCAA Tournament. This game occurred between the two teams that lost in the national semifinal games in the Final Four.

In 1969, the Tar Heels went to their third-consecutive Final Four. This was Dean Smith’s eighth season as North Carolina’s head coach.

North Carolina lost to Purdue 92-65 in the national semifinal game. In the other game, Drake lost to UCLA.

This set up the third place game between Drake and UNC.

Although UNC lost to Drake 104-84, Charles Scott had an impressive game. He set the record for most field goals made during a NCAA tournament game. Scott made 16 field goals against Drake. HE was 16-of-26 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free throw line, for a total of 35 points.
