Chris Webber’s timeout in 1993 national championship

The 1993 NCAA national championship between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Michigan Wolverines remains one of the best title games ever.

The Wolverines were led by the infamous “Fab Five” group consisting of Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson.

This championship game marked the second consecutive one for Michigan. In 1992, they lost to the Duke Blue Devils, 71-51.

The 1993 title game was the second time that Michigan and UNC played each other during that season.

Earlier in the season, Michigan defeated North Carolina 79-78 in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.

With 19 seconds left in regulation, Webber appeared to have traveled. However, the referees did not make the call.

With Michigan trailing UNC 73-71 with 11 seconds left in the game (at 1:19 mark in the video), Webber calls a timeout when he is double-teamed. Since Michigan had no more timeouts, the Tar Heels shot two free throws and received possession of the basketball.

This game marked Dean Smith’s second national championship and the school’s fourth national championship. Webber announced his decision to pro shortly after this game. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft.
