Rick Fox hit’s game-winner against No. 1 seeded Oklahoma Sooners

The 1989-90 season would an interesting season for UNC. They finished the season with a 21-13 record, North Carolina won the ACC Tournament by defeating the Duke Blue Devils 77-74.

Despite winning the 1990 ACC Tournament, the Tar Heels were awarded the eighth seed in the Midwest bracket. The Oklahoma Sooners were the No. 1 seed in the Midwest and the overall No. 1 seed in the entire tournament.

The Tar Heels were in danger of not making the Sweet 16 and were in the middle of a nine-year run in which they reached that round.

Junior forward Rick Fox was one the best players on the team this season. Smith drew up the play with point guard King Rice inbounding the ball. Sophomore guard Hubert Davis (current assistant coach for North Carolina) caught the pass and attempted to create his own shot.

When Davis saw that he did not have a shot, he passed the ball to Fox who was on the wing. Fox made his defender hesitate with his first step, then drove to hole where he had a clean look for his bank shot.

Fox shot the basketball off the backboard and the ball went through the hoop as time expired.

The win gave Smith his tenth-straight Sweet 16 appearance.

Dean Smith was the master of orchestrating a come-from-behind win. In the first game of the 1989-90 season, North Carolina beat James Madison 80-79 in the Maui Classic by overcoming a nine-point deficit with 1:10 remaining in the game.
