Lennie Rosenbluth sets scoring record in NCAA Tournament game

The 1956-57 season was a magical season for the Tar Heels. This season marked the first title that the Tar Heels won via the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 54-53 in triple-overtime to become the 1957 national champions.

The Tar Heels finished the season with a perfect 32-0 record.

Rosenbluth was the leader of this team. Rosenbluth was the ACC Player of the Year, National Player of the Year and first-team All-American in 1957.

In 1957, 32 teams went to the NCAA Tournament. In the second round, Rosenbluth exploded for 39 points against Canisius. The Tar Heels won the game by the score of 87-75.

Canisius was not a “cupcake” team. They went 17-6 that season. In addition, Canisius had five players score in double-figures against UNC in this game.

Rosenbluth went 15-of-30 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line en-route to 39 points. He added 10 rebounds as well.

UNC’s Tommy Kearns scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. Bob Cunningham finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds. Joe Quigg had eight points and nine rebounds while Pete Brennan scored six points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
