The opening round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament starts off Tuesday evening with play-in games. This year, there will be numerous great moments added to the list for years to come…

On Friday the No. 1 seed North Carolina Tar Heels will kick off their 2017 national title run facing No. 16 Texas Southern in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Tar Heels lost in the second round of the 2017 ACC Tournament to the Duke Blue Devils and still managed to keep their spot on the number one line.

In past years, 1993, 2005 and 2009 in particular, there is an interesting statistic. The 1993, 2005 and 2009 North Carolina Tar Heels lost a game in the ACC Tournament. Despite losing in the conference tournament championship, these Tar Heels squads won the coveted NCAA Tournament championship that year.

With that in mind, it is only right for us to look back at past Tar Heels’ teams and their shining moments in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels have had many great players come through their basketball program.
