UNC Basketball: Tar Heels’ best home performances vs. the Duke Blue Devils
No: 3: March 6, 2005
Similar to most of the other games on this list, this game featured two of the top teams in the nation at the time. Duke was No. 6 and North Carolina was the No. 2 team in the nation.
UNC had a bad shooting performance in this game. The Tar Heels went 27-of-67 (40.3%) from the field and made 1-of-11 (9%) three point field goals. To add insult to injury (no pun intended), junior guard Rashad McCants did not play in this game. He led the Tar Heels in scoring with nearly 20 points per game as a sophomore.
Carolina’s saving grace was controlling the boards. UNC out-rebounded Duke 48-30. Their rebounding kept them in the game.
This game marked one of the best comebacks for the Tar Heels. With a little over three minutes left in the game, Duke led UNC 73-64. During this crunch time, UNC’s veteran team came together.
UNC point guard Raymond Felton ran the show. Sean May and Jawad Williams buckled down and hit key shot after key shot.
The biggest shot in the game came from freshman Marvin Williams. UNC cut the nine point lead to two points after going on a 7-0 run for two minutes and 40 seconds. After Felton was fouled on a shot, he missed his second free throw. [Marvin] Williams secured the rebound and scored on the putback, while getting fouled. Williams connected on his free throw, giving the Tar Heels a 75-73 lead.
Duke had 17 seconds to get a shot off, but they could not convert two three-point field goals. North Carolina won this game 75-73.
Despite losing in the second round of the ACC Tournament to Georgia Tech, UNC made an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina defeated Illinois 75-70 in the 2005 NCAA national championship. This marked the first national title for UNC head coach Roy Williams.
