No. 7: March 8, 2009

This game was Senior Night for seniors Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green, Bobby Frasor, J.B. Tanner, Jack Wooten, Patrick Moody, and Mike Copeland.

North Carolina was the second-ranked team in the nation. Duke was ranked seventh. This game was very close in the first half. Duke led at halftime, 39-38. In the second, North Carolina’s core group consisting of Hansbrough, Green, Deon Thompson, Tywon Lawson and Wayne Ellington took over the game.

The Tar Heels had future NBA centers Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller coming off the bench this season.

Former starting point guard Frasor was a key component during this season as he backed up the starting backcourt of Lawson and Ellington.

Despite Duke’s Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler combining for 47 points, the Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils, 79-71. Hansbrough led UNC with 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Ellington finished the game with 16 points, two rebounds and two assists. Thompson had 14 points. Green scored 12 points. Lawson almost had a triple-double, with his stat line of 13 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

One month later, North Carolina won the national championship. UNC defeated Michigan State 89-72.
