A top 10 North Carolina Tar Heels’ list would not be complete without mentioning Michael Jordan.

The 1984 Tar Heel squad was one of the best UNC basketball teams ever. They lost three games the entire season, by a total of six points.

This game was featured the No. 2 Tar Heels against the No. 15-ranked Blue Devils. This game was very close. North Carolina led Duke by one point at halftime, 41-40. Duke managed to keep the game close in the second half.

The Blue Devils took a 73-71 lead late in the game. After Duke missed a free throw and UNC called a timeout after securing the rebound. In seven seconds, Matt Doherty went the length of the court and sank a floater with no time remaining.

At the end of the first overtime, the game was tied again. Both teams scored six points each. During the second overtime, North Carolina outscored Duke 17-4.

Jordan led the Tar Heels to a double-overtime victory over Duke, 96-83. Jordan finished the game with 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and one block. Sam Perkins scored 25 points also, along with 12 rebounds, two steals and one block.

This victory marked the first time in 10 years that an ACC team went undefeated in the ACC. This was the Dean Smith UNC team to do so.

The 1984 UNC team represents one of the best North Carolina Tar Heel teams ever. This team was loaded with future NBA talent in Jordan, Kenny Smith, Perkins and Brad Daugherty. Daugherty was the NBA’s 1986 overall number one draft pick. These players would help shape the NBA into what we see today.

A week after this game took place, the Tar Heels lose to the Blue Devils 77-75 in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. The loss to Duke on March 10 was North Carolina’s second loss of the season.
