No. 2: January 18, 1986

This matchup was the first game ever in the Dean E. Smith Center, which is often referred to as the “Dean Dome.”

The North Carolina Tar Heels were the top-ranked team in the nation, while the Duke Blue Devils were ranked No. 3.

Duke and UNC did not disappoint the fans in this game. In fact, this game marks one of the highest scoring games between these two teams.

Duke’s David Henderson scored 24 points and lead guard Johnny Dawkins added 22 points. Tommy Amaker and Mark Alarie scored 15 points apiece. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas played on this Blue Devils’ squad. He finished the game with six points, four rebounds, one assist and one block.

North Carolina’s Brad Daugherty and Steve Hale had one of their best college games ever. Hale led all scorers with 28 points. In addition, he had five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Hale went 10-of-12 from the field and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Daugherty finished the game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.

North Carolina defeated Due 95-92 to start the new era of UNC basketball games played in the Dean Dome.
